Antígona es el título de una tragedia de Sófocles, basada en el mito de Antígona y representada por primera vez en el año 441 a. C. De las tres obras tebanas, Antígona es la tercera en el orden de los acontecimientos representados en las obras, pero es la primera que escribió
Retratado como sabio y lleno de sensatez, Tiresias intenta advertir a Creonte de su locura y le dice que los dioses están enfadados. Consigue convencer a Creonte, pero es demasiado tarde para salvar a la impetuosa Antígona. Coro de los ancianos de Tebas (también representa la voz del pueblo).
Cuidar a nuestros muertos, nos enseña Antígona, es integrar su muerte en la vida. Es un acto de amor, tender ese lazo posible y deseado entre seres que se pertenecen y que se ven unos a otros como seres humanos. Los que fueron enterrados sin amor ni lágrimas, fueron deshumanizados por este acto.
Aristóteles lo estudia a fondo y afirma que la finalidad última del teatro es la “catarsis”: purgar los males del alma, a través de la compasión y el temor que infunden las acciones de los otros, con potencial de identificarse con vivencias individuales de cada espectador.
